BMW i8 Crash in Thailand is World’s First

Sure it’s cool to be the first on your block to own the BMW i8. But it’s not cool to be the first owner involved in a crash of the electric supercar.
One unlucky man in Thailand owns that distinction. On a sad day last month, his plug-in hybrid was struck hard on the passenger side by a Nissan Navara. A lowly pickup has brought down the mighty Morphin Power Ranger known as the i8.

According to BMWblog.com, the damage to the right passenger door is probably worse than it looks.
“Luckily, it’s made of CFRP and BMW says repairs are easier than ever on their new BMW i cars,” the blog reports.

There are scant details on how the accident happened. Let’s just say somebody – either the pickup driver or the i8 owner – turned at the wrong time. Our money is on the pickup driver being in the wrong because the i8 owner sent out a Tweet about it.
And, technically, this is the first crash of a production i8. A pre-production model got away from a test driver on a slippery German road back in January, according to Jalopnik. No word if the driver still works for BMW. Lets hope he wasn’t driving a Navara in Thailand 9 months later.
